Copper Mine in Papua New Guinea

North American Indigenous People Continue to be Lied to and Exploited

Heads up from Tony Holland and Mike Smith for JAR2

Mike Smith sent me the following e-mail and gave me permission to repost it and stated that it may be of interest to the indigenous peoples of North America.

I was talking with Tony Holland tonight and he was telling me that he had just found a reference to his ex-partner Sharon Singh. Sharon is an Indian Sikh, but her family live in Vancouver (Canada). Sharon has worked for Rio Tinto for some years. I have also spoken to Sharon myself when she was living with Tony.

I told Tony that I thought you may have heard about this project because you had talked with some of the people living in that area. So Tony said I should tell you that he thinks Rio Tinto is trying to hoodwink these tribal elders.”

“It seems there is some sort of bad deal going on between the First Nation and Rio Tinto over a uranium mine. This is the document Tony found:

http://www.environment.gov.sk.ca/2013-014EISappendixHWollastonPublic

Tony said that all such mines need a "Tailings Dam", which is where waste material is collected and prevented from running into the groundwater system. This type of dam does not appear to have been part of this project. Tony thinks this is because with uranium mining it is impossible to prevent radioactive waste material getting into the environment, which will then poison the environment for years to come. Tony thinks that Rio Tinto are trying to con the First Nation into thinking that this mining will be "safe".

Tony said this is not the first time that Rio Tinto has destroyed land to grab the minerals. There is also the case of the Bougainville copper mine:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bougainville_Copper

Tony said the guy mentioned in that article - Peter Taylor - has been heavily criticized for environmental damage. Rio Tinto is also mentioned negatively in these articles:

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/dec/19/bougainville-mine-locals-who-oppose-its-re-opening-must-have-a-voice

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-09-04/an-bougainville-unep/4935456

So it sounds like Rio Tinto wants to create the same mess and pollution in Canada, and spoil the land, and kill the fish, just for the profits from uranium!

This is an e-mail that Mr. Tony Holland sent to the Inuit Nation

Dear Sir;

I want to deal with reasons why your minister should look closely at the submissions of Singh and Frederick's and I will restate my contentions on all communications that I have about these 2 pple first and the move thru some of the admission being glossed over by Fredericks and Singh.: I would like to add, I was the chief cost engineer on Rossing Uranium mine in South West Africa in 1970, I have worked in both mining and enrichment of uranium.

I believe both Jay Fredericks and Sharon Singh to be crooks and both are likely to deceive the minister and the pple of the first nation.

I live in Australia, and I am 70 yrs old but I know Ms Singh very well, she stole $50000 from me. So briefly let me add, she stole $3000 in expensive wine (Grange) from a quadriplegic called Ian Wolstenhome, Ian fired her  and she was fired from Sims Supermarket for theft of money and goods, Singh also has a criminal arrest record here in oz and as well got her job at Rio in oz  by pretending to be an ozzie. She also has a close working relationship with members of an organized crime family here having been a business partner with one Paul Reed, in a place called Laverton, Reed set up to cannibalize cars, he has convictions for drug trafficking and manslaughter.

Three areas in the submission before your minister are initially of concern:

1. Treatment of waste water. The process of getting ore from rock involves smashing the rock in dust and using water and chemicals to grab the ore from the dust, the dust containing the ore is then dried and collected into bags for further processing, into either standard uranium or enriched uranium, on your site, it is already admitted that the  dust produced, in both mining and the leach/drying process  is already over the acceptable air quality limit, but what RIO are totally misleading your minister about is the treatment of water, they are dealing only with water as used in the chemical leach, not the water and rock slurry by products from the chemical leach/drying process that goes into tailings or pools as they are being called.

That rock slurry is very dangerous and uranium tailings world wide a cause of concern...as is being admitted by RIO these pools will be numerous all over the site, so kids can swim in it and animals can drink from it, they are open to weather, rain snow sun, ice skating can become a new deadly sport.

2. The minister should look closely at the admitted breach in dust control, this dust is uranium rich and RIO have submitted no controls for it.

3. Rios promises to give locals jobs would seem hollow to me, unless a local has the rt skill set RIO wont train anyone on site, and it is a promise RIO has made all over the world to con local natives, as we speak Natives in Mongolia have already stopped a project called OLU TOlgoi  because RIO cheated them, and hired few locals whilst charging exorbitant fees for non locals, that case is before the Court.

Regards,

Tony Holland
