The 23 of February is not an international holiday nor does it pretend to be. It is not “Men’s Day” or something of that sort. It is a day marked to remember and honor those, known and unknow, who have defended the Fatherland, Russia. Defenders of Russia can include military personnel, members of the security services, police and anyone else who role is to defend Russia. Although Defenders of the Fatherland Day is considered by many to be the closest thing to a “Men’s Day” in Russia, women who serve are also honored. For many Defenders of the Fatherland Day is seen as a test run for Women’s Day on May 8th, as men somewhat jokingly prepare their gift lists for their female acquaintances. The fact that President Putin lays a wreath at the Tombe of the Unknown Soldier is symbolic for there are many who serve and Defend the Fatherland but are never known and do so in secret with no accolades. God Protect them all.
